Although I’ve heard of it, I’ve never actually had the pleasure of playing the game Mahjong, so I needed to conduct some research before beginning this review. It would seem that Mahjong was originally an Asian table game that was developed in China in the 19th century. It is played using tiles featuring various symbols, and the aim is to match pairs or sets. These days, it's often played online and can be used for gambling. PG Soft are in on the action with the latter, producing this title inspired by the classic game. Mahjong Ways 2 is a medium volatility, five-reel video slot featuring an impressive maximum win of 100,000x and an RTP of 96.95%.
When I was young, there were none of these fancy electronic devices used by kids today, and we only had four channels on the TV, so I spent plenty of time playing board and card games with the family instead. I’m also a big fan of slots, so it looks like I may have been dealt a dream hand here. The action takes place across five reels, with rows set in a fixed 4-5-5-5-5-4 formation, creating 2,000 pay ways. Game-enhancing additions to enjoy include cascading reels, increasing multipliers ranging from x1 to x5, golden symbols that transform into wilds if involved in a winning sequence, and a free spins feature. In the bonus round, you’ll be given some extra help towards the massive maximum win available here through the addition of increased multiplier values and added golden symbols.
Shall we get those tiles dealt out and start matching some symbols? If you’d like a practice game first, check out the Mahjong Ways 2 demo slot. It’s available to play for free below!

Game developers often draw inspiration from popular table games when designing slots. There are some real blockbusters out there, with themes ranging from Monopoly to Battleships to pretty much everything in between. PG Soft tends to focus on the Asian market, so their slots within this category lean towards traditional games played in that part of the world. Some great examples are on offer, such as Win Win Fish Prawn Crab, a low volatility, six-reel video slot featuring a maximum win of 20,000x and an RTP of 96.72%. The inspiration behind this slot creation is a casino table game, also known as Hoo Hey How, which was invented by a very creative Chinese casino owner, and it ended up being so popular that it saved his establishment from bankruptcy. It features cascading reels, increasing multipliers and a free spins bonus. Now, personally, I usually tend to find that the original is often the best, I’m not always a fan of this sequel nonsense. Perhaps that could be the case with today’s review. Test out its predecessor, Mahjong Ways, to see what you think. Coming up next, though, we’ll look further into the features of Mahjong Ways 2, starting over at the pays section.
At the top of the paytable is the tile with the Green Writing, which will return 2.5x your total stake per line of five symbols. Next, it’s the tile with Red Writing at 2x, the image of the Playing Card at 1.5x, and the tile featuring Red and Blue Writing, which pays 0.75x. The lowest value symbols are all tiles that feature what I’d describe as numbered dice faces and are worth the following, 0.6x for both five and four, 0.5x for three, and 0.3x for both two and one.
Looking at the stake options on Mahjong Ways 2, we can see that there are many to choose from; these range from as low as €0.20 to as high as €100.00. With lots of choice between these figures, there’s likely to be a suitable stake selection available for the majority of players.
Focusing on the game mechanics, we can see that Mahjong Ways 2 uses a five-reel grid, with rows set up in a 4-5-5-5-4 formation. This setup creates a total of 2,000 payways. Winning combinations are formed by matching a minimum of three corresponding symbols from left to right, commencing on the leftmost reel. Any symbols involved in a win are then removed from the reels prior to the next cascade, where additional symbols drop down from the top to offer the opportunity for further wins to take place.
Above the reels, you will notice four multiplier values displayed: x1, x2, x3, and x5. At the start of any main game spin, this multiplier value is set to x1. Whenever a winning combination occurs, this value will move to the next highest increment prior to the next cascade. Once it reaches x5 after the third cascade, it cannot go any higher in the base game, and any further wins within that spin will be multiplied by x5.
During any spin, some symbols that land on reels 2-4 may appear in gold. Any of these symbols that are involved in a winning combination will transform into a wild before the next cascade.
Landing three scatter symbols on the reels during any one spin will trigger the free spins feature, beginning with ten free spins. Each additional scatter symbol that lands on top of the required three will award a further two starting spins.
During this bonus, all symbols that land on reel three will be gold-plated. The multiplier values are increased from those seen in the base game and will become x2, x4, x6, and x10. The multiplier value resets back to x2 at the end of each spin. The free spins bonus can be fully re-triggered by landing three scatters on the reels during any spin.
I must admit, when it comes to playing Mahjong, I’m none the wiser after that. But I guess I don’t necessarily need to know in order to play this slot or get lucky and win the ridiculous potential jackpot of 100,000x! The graphics and visuals are slightly dull compared to most other PG Soft titles; however, with a slot based on a game usually played on an old wooden table, that’s probably to be expected. The high RTP is evident through the large number of base game hits this slot produces, and the free spins bonus is good fun with the addition of extra golden symbols and higher multipliers.
